Just in from Emily Lyons, one of our Best Day volunteers in New Jersey

Thank you so much for your clothing donation to Afroplan Foundation!! My mom told me you requested I write a little something you guys can use on your blog! I will attach some pictures to this email and you can find more on Afroplan’s Facebook page in a picture album labeled: Best Day Clothing Donation.

Best Day Foundation New Jersey was generous enough to donate 130 child size tee shirts to Afroplan Foundation, a day center for street children in Usa River Tanzania.

I have been volunteering with Afroplan Foundation for a year now and know theses children very well.

Last time I was home in New Jersey my mom asked me if I wanted to volunteer for a day taking four of her student from the NJ commission for the blind to a Best Day Foundation event. I had so much fun at the event and was very impressed with the work Best Day Foundation is doing around the country, and now oversees.

When I first brought the shirts to Afroplan Foundation I knew it was going to be an exciting day! A new tee shirt is a big deal here, but I didn’t know just how much pride the children and staff members would receive from getting these shirts. School uniforms play an important role in the community culture of Usa River. If you have a school uniform it means that you are wealthy enough to receive education. The children at Afroplan do not fit into this group of elite educated children, until the day they received the Best Day Foundation tee shirts.

The head teacher gave a stern announcement that the tee shirts were to be worn to school everyday and washed and dried each night. Afroplan is not a formal school but finally they have a way of becoming recognized within the community.

All of the children LOVE their new “uniform”. They take so much pride in wearing these tee shirts, everyday since, at least 5 kids will come up to me, point at their chest and excitedly tell me “Ticha Emily, Bes-ti Day!”

On behalf of everyone at Afroplan Foundation I would like to formally thank Best Day Foundation for filling the lives of our students with such pride and purpose by donating us our new school uniform tee shirt.
